BET: The Evolution and Impact of Black Entertainment Television

Black Entertainment Television, better known as KUBET, has played an instrumental role in the development of the entertainment industry and the representation of Black culture in America and beyond. Founded by media mogul Robert L. Johnson in 1980, BET became the first cable network dedicated to the entertainment of African Americans. While the acquisition by Viacom provided BET with the financial resources to expand, it also brought about challenges, including criticism from some viewers who felt that the network had become more commercially driven, particularly in its portrayal of Black culture. In 2017, BET launched a digital streaming service, BET+, in partnership with Tyler Perry, which further solidified the network’s commitment to producing and distributing original content that speaks to the African American experience.
